How can you talk about sports, gardening, financial planning, the supernatural, cuisine, or any other everyday topic without knowing how to say it in Yiddish?
In February 2013 the League for Yiddish launched the popular series “Verter fun der Vokh” (Words of the Week) on our Facebook page. In the years since, hundreds of thematic lists have appeared weekly, on all sorts of topics: cuisine, politics, holidays, sports, clothing, animals, health and many others. Although the words were mostly culled from our manuscript of the Comprehensive English-Yiddish Dictionary (published by Indiana University Press in 2016), Words of the Week became a “thing” in and of itself.
You can find our weekly words on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.
Our members receive a weekly Words of the Week newsletter delivered directly to their inboxes. Our readers and followers learn from, and get a kick out of, the “Verter fun der Vokh” and frequently send us comments.
We publish past lists in alphabetical and chronological order on our website and update them weekly. Any Yiddish speaker, reader, student, or aficionado who visits can also learn how to say these words in Yiddish and have fun doing so!
