“Yiddish Today” is a series of video programs that present artists, researchers, and cultural activists from around the world who are creating contemporary Yiddish culture. We invite you to listen to this pre-recorded conversation (in Yiddish) between Eli Benedict and Rabbi Mendel Hersh Paneth.
Hear about his life as the son of a Hasidic rebbe; stories about his dynasty, and about the clothes and customs that are specific to descendants of Hasidic rabbis. Learn how he introduced comics in Yiddish to the Hasidic world through magazines and books that he published. We also discuss his various types of creative work as a cantor, lecturer, writer, graphic artist, painter and even a cooking instructor.
Mendel Hersh Panet was born in Antwerp, Belgium, into a royal family of Hasidic rabbis from the Deyzh dynasty. Following his marriage, he worked as a teacher in a boys’ school. He founded and published very popular Yiddish children’s magazines, notably Kindline and Hundred, which prominently featured comics. These days, he delivers lectures, conducts tours, and manages a thriving YouTube channel in Yiddish.
