“Yiddish Today” is a series of video programs that present artists, researchers, and cultural activists from around the world who are creating contemporary Yiddish culture.
Watch this this conversation (in Yiddish) between Eli Benedict and Elliott (Elye) Palevsky, Hear about Elye’s family’s history and their work on behalf of Yiddish in Lithuania and then in America, what it was like to grow up in a Bundist home, and what it means to be a Bundist today. We also talk about his various roles in Yiddish organizations over the years.
Elliott (Elye) Palevsky was born in New York to a family from Lithuania. He has been active for decades in various Yiddish organizations in New York, among them: as a culture director at Camp Hemshekh (New York); board member of the League for Yiddish, and more. He has taught Yiddish language, literature and culture at the Yiddish Institute (Vilnius University), Queens College (New York), and Workmen’s Circle and Sholem Aleichem Schools.
