“Yiddish Today” is a series of video programs produced by the League for Yiddish that present artists from around the world who are creating contemporary Yiddish culture.
In this episode A conversation (in Yiddish) between Gitl Schaechter-Viswanath and Dr. Miriam Trinh about her relationship with Yiddish and her teaching program “Yo – Yiddish Ort”. We will also talk about her work as the editor-in-chief of “Afn Shvel,” the magazine of the League for Yiddish, a little about the history of the magazine.
Dr. Miriam Trinh is a researcher, teacher, editor, and cultural activist, as well as the editor-in-chief of “Afn Shvel.” Born in Krakow (Poland), she grew up in Germany and immigrated to Israel. She studied philosophy and Yiddish, wrote her master’s thesis at the Sorbonne (Paris) and her doctorate – on multilingual poetry in the ghettos and camps – at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. Since 1999 she has been teaching Yiddish and Yiddish literature in many places, including: Paris, Oxford, Strasbourg, Trier, Vilnius, Jerusalem, Tel Aviv and New York. In 2013-2015 she was a post-doctoral student at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore. Her research interests are Holocaust literature, mainly in Yiddish, and the multilingual literary response among European Jews to the rise of Nazism.
