“Yiddish Today” is a series of video programs that present artists, researchers, and cultural activists from around the world who are creating contemporary Yiddish culture.
A View of the Forward Archive. A conversation (in Yiddish) between Eli Benedict and the Forward’s archivist : Chana Pollack. Hear the story of the longest-running Yiddish newspaper, the Forward; the history of the archive and what kind of materials are housed there; where you can find all the old issues; and the newspaper’s former radio station. We will also touch on Chana’s own history, and her work at the archive.
Chana Pollack is the Forward’s archivist, responsible for research, translation and production of original archival content of the newspaper. Among Chana’s products you can find a translation of Forward founder and editor Abraham Cahan’s travelogue, recently published on the Yiddish Book Center’s site, as well as the book A Living Lens:Photographs of Jewish Life From the Pages of the Forward (ed. Alana Newhouse, W.W. Norton 2007). Chana was the camera operator, editor and producer for the Forward’s video series Yiddish Writers Monologues, featuring interviews with several of the last generation of Yiddish writers raised before the Holocaust.
